Change is good! For years I’ve been accustomed to one smartwatch, thinking its the best watch for blending fitness, style and managing everyday tasks, but the new Garmin Venu has me rethinking what I wear on my wrist. Just in time for the holidays the Garmin Venu smartwatch splashes onto the market offering a great deal on some truly useful features. In my opinion its the best smartwatch of 2019! Let me explain why….

As an ultra-distance runner I’ve always known Garmin to produce high-quality, GPS devices capable of tracking a variety of activities. While Garmin is the go-to name for elite endurance athletes, I’ve previously shied away from purchasing, knowing I’m so much more than the sport I participate in. I stuck with a watch perhaps limited in its fitness abilities in exchange for one that fit my lifestyle as a traveler, adventurer, and creative. No longer do I need to compromise. The Garmin Venu allows me to have all the features I care about plus more. Head over to Garmin’s website to check it out or keep reading for my take it what sets it apart from the competition.

Usually my days start off on a treadmill. I run. A lot. A morning without a minimum eight miles rarely feels like a morning at all. My phone goes on “do not disturb,” and music pipes in thru my earbuds while my body and mind reach for that runner’s flow. I do it for the love of it… but also to set goals, work toward them and achieve. Never before have I had as much data at my fingertips- or rather on my wrist- as I do now with the Garmin Venu. It tracks my cadence, stride length, heart rate and my pace throughout my run session. Then it breaks each metric down into comprehensive charts. Data like this is not only eye-opening and fun to see, its valuable information that helps me improve form and technique.

Cross-training is an important component of a healthy body. Staying flexible and keeping our muscles guessing is part of what enables growth. During my weight-lifting sessions the Garmin Venu’s fitness tracking features count my reps, sets, calories burned and monitors heart rate. Using the preloaded workouts, my time at the gym has felt fresh again. From the linked app on my phone, I’ve download a wide variety of workouts ranging from beginner’s basics to more advanced exercises. The other day I found my flow while practicing the Yoga For Runners instructional and then tried out The Hotel Workout, a thirty minute session for exactly that, those time we find ourselves in a hotel gym with less than ideal equipment. The preloaded workouts display right on the beautiful Garmin Venu watch face with fully animated characters putting creativity back into my fitness routine.

But its not all about movement. Yes, the Garmin Venu has the outstanding GPS that Garmin is known for, so all those outdoor adventures - swimming, rowing, climbing, biking- the list is long and plentiful- are tracked, recorded and logged with the most statistics of any smartwatch on the market; but it monitors another area which athletes and non-athletes alike tend to overlook. Sleep. One of the most important aspects of training, of living a healthy life in entirety is consistently giving our bodies and our minds rest. Our culture holds those who boast the little time they sleep in high regard; but science tells us we all need a solid night of sleep during which our bodies repeat the four-stage sleep cycle multiple times. The Garmin Venu tracks and displays all four stages, Awake, Light, Deep and REM sleep, while mapping my respiration and Pulse Ox, the oxygen level within my blood (a measurement extremely helpful when at elevation).

I could go on and on about the stats the Garmin Venu tracks. There’s a Stress Level assisting me throughout the day to take moments to breath, rest and energize. There’s the Body Battery, displaying an overall “Charged” score based on rest, activity, heart rate and stress stats as well as a “Drained” score. The Garmin Venu is loaded with tracking features that make improving our health and wellness easy to understand and fun to build upon.

The Garmin Venu offers all of this advanced technology in a simple and stream-lined look, stylish and versatile. The sleek round face plate is clear, bright and luminous with its AMOLED display, a quality superior even to the great OLED screens we’ve come to enjoy. Fully customizable, I change the watch face to reflect my mood and style. With interchangeable watch straps, the Venu becomes suitable for any look, any feel, any occasion.

Let’s Go Explore with Garmin Venu

Previously my smartwatch battery was the ultimate disappointment, but let me tell you a story. It was a Monday early afternoon I first came home with my Garmin Venu. With an easy out of the box set-up, connecting it to wi-fi and synching my desired apps, it was quickly onto my wrist. It wasn’t until the Sunday, a full five days later that I first charged my smartwatch. And trust me, with two workouts daily- a run and a lift session- in addition to walking and other physical activity, I’m non-stop on the move throughout my days. The battery is far and away the best I’ve seen in a smartwatch before, giving me confidence in its strength and durability whether out on the trails or picking up that afternoon pick-me-up coffee.

Say what? Yeah, not only am I enjoying Garmin Venu’ fitness tracking abilities and its style, but this is the smartwatch for the daily activities of life, one tap Garmin pay to make purchases or controlling my music while strolling down the street on way to yet another business meeting. With Garmin Venu notifications alert me to my calls, texts and friends’ Instagram posts. Its connected to Instagram, Snapchat, Spotify and many other music services.

This holiday season take all the best from the past and step into the future while trying something new yourself. Get creative with your personal style, celebrate your fitness and go about your daily life invigorated with the Garmin Venu!
